Before I invest $200 into a 61 key board, I need to know the most important question of all.
What sound will play when bringing in the sound to record?
Will it play the sound effect from the keyboard itself? Will it play the effect that I have programmed in the proggie that I'm importing into (Fruity Loops, Soundforge, what have ya)? Or, hence the name: will it play the all-too-known "midi" elevator sound?
I see no answers to this from the makers of the proggies, or any online notification stating WHAT will be played. I don't want it to sound like the keyboard effect or like the standard midi.wav (elevator music). I want it to grab the effect that I have set-up in the proggie.

From my experience, you can have all 3 options play depending on how you set it up. IF you have no program options set on the keyboard (im not sure if this keyboard is a fully functional synth with FX built in ala a Roland or a Korg..for $200 bux, im going to assume its not.. or if its simply a midi enabled controller type) like if its just a 'controller' and not a synth, then you will by default most likely get your midi elevator sound. Just a piano really. You can link it in to the progies in the programs audio options (most programs have a midi in tab where you can select the driver for the keyboard.) Are you plugging the keyboard in to a dedicated midi soundcard? Or is it going in to a regular sound card or even an onboard? If you are planning to record, you wil want to also being using ASIO drivers for the card (most integrated dont have these i find so you can get an ASIO driver called 'ASIO for all'. Google it). IF you find that the midi keyboard is still not uising the effects in the program, you can try to use something called 'midi yoke' to bridge your keyboard to the program. I have to do this with Absynth3. BAsically yoke links the keyboard to absynth so that when i press keys on the keyboard, you can see the same keys being depressed on the absynth3 graphical keyboard and absynth effects are played instead of the keyboards piano. Im nopt sure if im helping you here or confusing you more. Basically, the point is, these things are configurable so that if the keyboard doesnt play the effects in the program you are using by default, you can set it up so that it does.

I'm looking at "midi compatible" which is more than likely, "controller". No big-wig synth (sweeeeeeeet). I guess the config is the answer I'm looking for. My sound input of choice will be FL Producer. I know it will have to be configurable. I use the standard comp keyboard to stroke notes, but it's tough knowing which key is for what, and im not quick with it like regular note keyboard. this will be going straight into my sound card (midi/joy). i'm sure the keyboard will have something on configing SOMETHING, but more than likely to stuff like Quicktime Pro to produce wav files to make tubular bells sounds. I'll shop around and read about this "controller". Walmart is carrying them for the season (christmas) for 90-180 dollars. But, I'm always leaning to Best Buy for the boards, and since they have more goodies (stupid f/x and animated color display, whoopee), they range from 150-500. I dont need the horns and whistles.. just give me a regular keyboard that i can plugin and it screams, "FUCK ME" when programmed to.
